Ansonia CERT arranged for Tyler Roasa DVM of Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center, Region 2 CTSTART Director, & Region 2 ESF 11 Chair to present on Animal First Aid for First Responders. This class was held at the Ansonia Medical Services Building. Topics included: brief physical exam on dogs & cats; common injuries (trauma, wounds, hyperthermia, smoke inhalation, burns); basic CPR & use of oxygen for pets in distress; handling & transporting injured pets; zoonotic diseases.


Monday January 12, 2015    |    6:00 - 9:00pm

NVMRC hosted an American Heart Association adult and child CPR and AED training/certification course. This certification is good for 2 years. It was held at the Echo Hose Training Facility in Shelton.

Sandy Hook Newtown’s Official

“Green Ribbon Ride”

Sunday May 5 , 2013  


This one time charity was Sponsored by Sandy Hook Fire and Rescue to Remember the 26 Fallen Angels.  Funds raised helped support Sandy Hook Fire, the Newtown Relief Fund, and two local Children’s Charities and Agencies - The Center for Women and Families and Al’s Angels. 


NVMRC members were available to assist with rehab services during this community event that had thousands of attendees/participants.  NVMRC had the opportunity to partner with local EMS and promote the Medical Reserve Corps in the community.






Narcan & Opiates Training

Monday June 6, 2016    |     6:30pm - 8:00pm


NVMRC and Echo Hose Ambualnce hosted a Narcan and Opiates training at the Echo Hose Training Facility in Shelton on Monday June 6th.  The training was provided by Joanne Montgomery, Director of Behavioral Services, Danbury.


30 people attended this event representing 4 MRC units and 2 CERT units from both CT DEMHS Regions 1, 2 & 5! 8 MRC volunteers were sworn in by the Shelton Emergency Management Director.

Local Health Fairs


Wednesday September 30, 2015    |    9:00 - 12:00pm


Unit Leader Jess had a table set up at the Senior Health & Wellness Fair hosted by Senator Kevin Kelly, Representative Jason Perillo & Representative Ben McGorty to provide Seniors with emergency preparedness information and to recruit new NVMRC members!  This fair happened to take place on America's PrepareAthon! Day and took place at the Shelton Senior Center.

Unit Leader Jess had a table set up at the 30th Annual Senior Health Fair hosted by Senator Joseph Crisco Jr. at Warsaw Park in Ansonia to provide Seniors with emergency preparedness information and to recruit new NVMRC members!  NVHD was also present administering flu shots!

NVMRC hosted guest speaker, Jonathan Best, Director of the Office of Emergency Management at the CT Department of Public Health. He discussed the preparedness and response role of DPH and how MRC's throughout the State of CT participate in response.

NVMRC hosted a training on SMART Triage.  The classroom portion was part one of the training. This was to prepare for drill opportunities for members to have hands on experience with triage.

Regional Active Shooter/Personal Safety Workshop

Saturday September 19, 2015    |     11:00 - 2:00pm


The Shoreline MRC Unit hosted this free "Active Shooter/ Personal Safety Workshop" which included  an overview of "Active Shooter" basic information (i.e. history, examples, etc.), information on the "Run, Hide, Flight" response, police response, and basic emergency and medical information during this type of scenario.


This was a Region 2 MRC workshop hosted by the Shoreline MRC at the Guilford Fire Head Quarters that some NVMRC members attended.

Monday November 10, 2014

NVMRC hosted a free Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course that teaches individuals how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials.

Wednesday September 10 ,2014

NVMRC members attended a hands on training lead by the Special Operations Lt. of Echo Hose Ambulance. Unit members had the opportunity to go through the Special Ops truck, learn about its capabilities, and what their role may be in assisting the special ops team when called to duty. This provided the NVMRC with familiarity of the response capabilities in the area and will allow for greater collaboration in future response efforts.

Volunteers were presented with an overview of mass dispensing from the federal, state, and local levels. Volunteers received brief just in time training on the basic POD stations, and had hand-on experience working at each station.

The training fulfilled requirements specific to national core competencies. MRC members were sworn in by the local EMD solidifying liability coverage for volunteers when activated.

MRC volunteers and local EMT's joined Emergency Management Program Specialist for a weather preparedness training. Continuing education credits were offered to EMT's and Nurses.

MRC volunteers provided information on radon and free radon testing kits at a local libraries in the community.

How to Recognize & Survive a Violent Situation

Wednesday October 29, 2014    |     5:30pm = 8:30pm


The Pomperaug Health District MRC hosted a  workshop that included topics like defining workplace violence and recognizing warning signs, lessons learned from past events and case studies, situational awareness, and personal preparedness plans and lifestyle choices.  Attendees learned how to R.I.D.E (Recognize, Identify, Decide, Execute & Evaluate).


This was a Region 5 MRC workshop hosted by the Pomperaug Health District MRC at the Jewish Federation in Southbury, CT that some NVMRC members attended.

7th Annual

Connecticut Citizen Corps Council

Conference

Thursday October 16, 2014    |     8:00am = 4:30pm


The CT Citizen Corps Council put on a statewide conference that included a number of different guest speakers and learning tracks.  Jeff Bauman was the keynote speaker and was very inspirational.  He stood at the finish line of the Boston Marathon awaiting his girlfriend to finish.  He was gravely injured, losing both his legs, along with other serious injuries.  Jeff shared his story and stayed for a meet-and-greet and book signing afterward. 


Some of the  training tracks that took place included sessions on The Readys! Train the Trainer - Emergency Preparedness Training for People with Access and Functional Needs, a workshop/PLAYshop on Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) in children, and a MRC table top exercise about winter storms.


This conference was held at the Water's Edge Resort & Spa in Westbrook, CT.

Psychological First Aid

NVMRC hosted a Psychological First Aid training at the Echo Hose Training Facility in Shelton on Wednesday March 2nd. Kathy Dean, MSSW, Coordinator of the CT Disaster Behavioral Health Network presented the training.


Over 40 people attended this event representing 5 MRC & 4 CERT units from both CT DEMHS Regions 2 & 5! 21 MRC volunteers were sworn in by the Shelton Emergency Management Director.

The Pomperaug Health District MRC hosted a symposium on Global Emerging Infections & Local Response.   Guest speaker: 


Dr. Jim Hadler, former CT Epidemiologist (25 years) and now consultant to infectious disease programs at Yale, CT DPH, and NYC.


Dr. Ellen Neuhaus, Epidemiologist and Infectious Disease Physician at Rockville General Hospital (Vernon).


Lisa Dunkle, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Protein Sciences Corporation (Meriden).





Naugatuck Valley Health District
First Annual MRC Flu Clinic

Tuesday October 13, 2015    |     3;30pm - 7:00pm


NVMRC nurses and non=medical volunteers fully staffed a night flu clinic at the Naugatuck Valley Health District.  This was the first NVMRC flu clinic!


The Naugatuck Valley Health District is governed by a Board of Directors. Representatives are appointed by our member municipalities according to a formula set forth in the Connecticut General Statutes.  The Board of Directors meeting followed the flu clinic, so Jess presented to the Board about the MRC.
